From Mexico City to Co. Wicklow

From Mexico City to Co. Wicklow

My career began in Mexico City, where I spent 23 years as a senior in-house translator at Ruiz-Vivanco y Asociados S.C., one of the city’s leading translation agencies. The work was demanding and varied — high volumes, tight deadlines, and clients who included international law firms, Big Four accounting firms, government ministries, multinational corporations, and financial services organisations. I managed a team of junior translators and developed the discipline and judgement that long-form, high-stakes translation demands.

Alongside commercial work, I also translated for NGOs and humanitarian organisations — a context where clarity and cultural sensitivity carry a different kind of weight, and where there is no room for ambiguity.

In 2019 I relocated to Ireland, where I have since built a freelance practice serving direct clients and agencies. Current work includes ongoing technical translation for an Italian manufacturer of educational engineering equipment, marketing and food-sector translations for European producers, legal and financial projects across a range of industries, and continued translation work for NGOs and humanitarian organisations.

Three things that set my work apart

There are very few translators based in Ireland who are native speakers of Mexican Spanish. For companies operating in or entering the Mexican market — whether in law, finance, or trade — that distinction matters. Mexican legal and business Spanish has its own register, vocabulary, and conventions. I produce translations that work for Latin American audiences, not just translations that are technically accurate. Having lived and worked in Ireland for a number of years, I also bring a genuine understanding of Irish culture, business norms, and communication styles — this means I bring cultural fluency to both ends of the translation, not just linguistic accuracy.

I am a Member of the Chartered Institute of Linguists (MCIL No. 70130) — the professional standard for translators in Ireland and the UK. This qualifies me to provide certified translations accepted by INIS, the Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service, and other official bodies. It is a meaningful credential in a sector where anyone can call themselves a translator.

Languages are the medium; subject knowledge is the foundation. Over the course of my career I have built genuine expertise in legal instruments, financial statements, AML and compliance materials, and corporate governance documentation. I understand what the documents mean — which is what allows me to render them accurately in another language.

How I work

How I work

I use Trados Studio, Memsource (Phase), and SmartCat — the industry-standard Computer-Assisted Translation tools — which ensure consistency across large or ongoing projects and compatibility with agency workflows.

On AI-assisted translation: I offer machine translation post-editing (MTPE) as a service, which means I apply professional human review to AI-generated translation output. This can reduce cost and turnaround time on suitable projects — typically high-volume, lower-register content.

For legal, financial, and certified translation work, I apply full human translation from source to target. I am transparent with clients about which approach is being used, and I never apply an AI-assisted workflow without prior agreement.
